J. Michael Young Scholarship

Another way to raise money individually for the conference is through applying for the J. Michael Young Scholarship from the Honors Department. You do not have to be a part of the Honors program to be eligible for this scholarship. The Honors department awards up to $300 for a conference or travel off campus (such as our MUN conference).

You can find a link to the application here: http://www.honors.ku.edu/scholarships/jmyounginfo.shtml

Please note that the application is due October 20th. You also do not need to have the MUN Faculty sponsor to fill out a recommendation letter, I would suggest that you ask a Faculty member who is familiar with Model UN or someone who can attest to how much you will be getting out of the conference.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at ku.modelun@gmail.com

Country Assignements!

*edit - sorry to all of those who checked yesterday, I have been having some problems with the website.

I hope everyone is excited about representing Namibia and Yemen!

These are some good starter sites (courtesy of Jay!). They should help you get a feel for what life in your country is like. They have foreign policy outlines and reading lists.

Namibia

Searching the United Nations site is also a good idea. There are a number of useful non-country specific resources listed in the handout, which is available at
http://www.stanford.edu/group/Jonsson/mun.html

A little about committees - what they are and some links to provide some general information.

Namibia will represent

· The First, Third, Fourth, and Sixth Committee of the General Assembly (http://www.un.org/Depts/dhl/resguide/gasess.htm)

· The Economic and Social Council (www.un.org/docs/ecosoc/)

· African Union of 2015 (http://www.africa-union.org/)

Yemen will represent

· The First, Third, Fourth, and Sixth Committee of the General Assembly (http://www.un.org/Depts/dhl/resguide/gasess.htm)

· The International Atomic Energy Agency (http://www.iaea.org/)

We’ll be deciding who will represent which committee at our next meeting (Namibia on Monday, Yemen on Tuesday).

Financial Briefing

We will be having a quick (half an hour) "financial briefing" Monday September 11 at 9pm in the Regionalist Room of the Kansas Union. We will be covering the following -
  • Filling out forms required for the Student Senate bill - please bring your social security number!
  • Getting more flight information - if you are considering booking a flight with the group please bring your check book
  • Signing up for shifts for the Kansas Speedway fundraiser
  • Discussing a date for the Applebee's Fundraiser
If you can't make this Monday time, please e-mail ku.modelun@gmail.com to set up a time with an officer so we can get you to fill out the Senate form and catch you up on what we talked about in the meeting. Since the bill is due on Friday, please arrange a time Monday-Thursday.

Also, country preferences were due yesterday so we should be hearing soon what countries we will be representing!

See you all on Monday!
